Apps that helped you save money in Europe?
Main Post:
Any apps you'd personally recommend to save money across Europe? Maybe even for Germany/Berlin where we moved?
Anything from saving on products, hotels, flights, food, hobbies, events...
Or apps to stay on top of your financials to save money.
Let's be creative.
Thank you in advance :)
Personally I know and have or still use:
- My Budget Book (save spendings, incomes, budgets)
- mydealz (find good deals on trips)
- DiscoEat (discounts on restaurants outside of rush hours)
- Too Good to Go (end of day sales at bakeries and restaurants)
Top Comment: The fork app is amazing for saving money on dining out. Not uncommon to see 50% off deals at good places. And you earn points you can then use to pay.
Money market etfs/funds in Europe
Main Post:
Hello,
What are the best etfs/funds that track the Euro short-term rate (âŹSTR)? My research shows that Lyxor Euro Overnight Return UCITS ETF - Acc matches this criteria. Anyone suggest something similar or better?
Top Comment: MM swaps: Xtrackers II EUR Overnight Rate Swap, Lyxor Smart Overnight Return C-EUR, Lyxor Euro Overnight Return Short sovereign bonds: Invesco Euro Cash 3 Months, Amundi ETF Govies 0-6 Months Euro Investment Grade Short investment grade corp bonds: iShares EUR Ultrashort Bond Use the filters on justetf.com , e.g. Money Market, currency EUR, (show all listings) >> result Bond, type Corporate, bond rating Investment Grade, Maturity 0-3, currency EUR, (show all listings) >> result You need to manually remove some incorrect hits, e.g. JPMorgan USD Ultra-Short Income has an EUR ticker, but it's not really an EUR fund, so doesn't belong. I use ETFs because of tax advantages, but mutual funds may be equal or better in your case, depending on taxes & broker fees (e.g. some mutual funds trade with no commission on IBKR). Net-of-fund-fees performance depends on what mutual fund share classes you qualify for (minimum investment). I use XEON for cash at the moment. It currently performs a tad better & has much better volume/liquidity/spread than CSH2. However, when I had CSH2 (earlier this year), there was lending interest and I was able generate more than 50bps of extra yield, so it worked out better than XEON. No idea, however, if that continues to be the case for CSH2 (XEON yields no lending income). If your broker doesn't share lending income with you (or you have turned it off), XEON should be better. (The collateral for lending is higher than value + annual gain, so it's riskless, BTW.)
How much money in European green deal and American one?
Main Post:
Can somebody give me some info about budget for European green deal till 2030-50 and american one. And what ist the legislative status of those two proposals? Thank you a lot.
Top Comment:
IRA was estimated to cost $385B, but as it is uncapped, may actually be closer to $1T. Previous US bills like Build Back Better had climate-oriented portions as well.
Donât know about the European deal.
Move money to invest in US or invest in EU?
Main Post:
I have dual citizenship and US and EU bank accounts. Iâm new to investing but is it better to transfer the money in my EU account to my US one and invest in the US or diversity both in US and EU markets?
Top Comment: Duel citizenship in which EU country? And where are you a tax resident of? There are no unified European tax laws when it comes to capital markets. Investing in Europe is very much still a country-by-country thing. Each country has different tax laws, fiscal advantages, etc. At the end of the day, you can invest in European funds in the US and US funds in the EU. You're not diversifying by choosing one account in one country over the other. The question is simply where is it better to invest tax-wise, and can you.

What's your experience with ⏠MMFs on IBKR, both mutual and exchange-traded.
An advantage of some mutual funds is that they are free & easy to trade on IBKR (no commissions, 0 or low minimum). ETFs, on the other hand, may outperform MFs, esp. the lower-minimum share classes (higher-performing share classes require large initial purchases, like 250K or even 1-3M). ETFs may also be tax-advantaged and/or provide a good RoI boost via SYEP.
Here are some examples with roughly similar performance:
- ETF Xtrackers II EUR Overnight Rate Swap LU0290358497 (XEON)
- ETF Lyxor Smart Overnight Return LU1190417599 (CSH2)
- tx-free Allianz Euro Cash "A" LU0052221412
- tx-free Amundi Euro Liquidity SRI "C" FR0011630557
- tx-free (but min 250K) BlackRock ICS Euro Liquidity Fund "Admin II" IE00B29LM231
- tx-free BNP Paribas Euro Money Market "C" LU0083138064
I've used CSH2 and XEON. CSH2 had very good SYEP income (yielding >50bps annually), but I have no long-term observations. XEON so far has no SYEP income (but I only got it recently).
I'd be interested to hear from folks who use the mutual funds. There are scary front-load fees of up to several percent on some/most. Am I correct to assume that no such fees are charged when purchasing via IBKR?
Rough(!) performance comparisonTop Comment: Personally I really hate their disclaimers stating that nothing is guaranteed and you can loose your entire principal for different reasons and should be aware of that and accept it... It just feels unnecessarily risky for a 3% return... at least for a company stock I know I still own the share and they need to go bankrupt for me to loose everything. These ETFs are just sort of vaguely disclaiming that you could just loose everything for one reason or another and itâs ânot a big dealâ.. feels like looking for yield on crypto defi protocols, where you should be monitoring it 4x per day to make sure itâs stilll there, lol. I realise this is some general disclaimer, but donât understand MMF well enough to be able to gauge this risk... :/
